RICHARD PERKINS
Associate Professor of Environmental Geography, LSE

About Richard
Richard Perkins is Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Environment at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He holds a BA in Geography and an MSc in Environmental Change and Management from the University of Oxford. Richard later went onto to gain PhD in Geography from the University of Cambridge based on field research on environmental-economic restructuring in India. Before joining LSE, Richard was a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in the School of Geography at the University of Plymouth.
Richard’s research broadly centres on the governance of environmental and climate change. His earlier work explored the diffusion of environmental innovations (technologies, policies, and organisational practices) and the politics of environmental policy implementation. More recently, his research has focused on three themes: sustainability governance by financial actors; corporate climate action and net zero targets; and the role of legitimacy and controversy in shaping the trajectories of environmental and climate governance. His work has been widely published in leading journals across geography (Annals of the Association of American Geographers), business studies (Journal of Business Ethics), political science (Journal of European Public Policy), and environmental change (Global Environmental Change).

Richard has extensive teaching experience at undergraduate, postgraduate, and executive levels. His teaching currently focuses on public environmental regulation and sustainability governance by corporates and financial actors. He has long served as Programme Director of the MSc in Environmental Policy and Regulation, which boasts a diverse and accomplished alumni network. Richard has supervised numerous PhD students to completion and particularly welcomes applications related to sustainable finance and corporate climate action.
